Case Study: Ulcerative Colitis, Proctitis, and Crohn’s Disease

  • In 2018, a 42-year-old woman came to my clinic with a long history of chronic digestive illness. She had initially been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, later reclassified as Crohn’s disease, and had been suffering with symptoms for nine years.

Her condition included ongoing bowel inflammation, rectal bleeding, abdominal discomfort, and periods of severe digestive distress that significantly affected her quality of life.

Medical Background and Symptoms

Over the years, she had tried a wide range of conventional treatments for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including steroids, anti-inflammatory medications, and eventually an immunosuppressant (Azathioprine). Unfortunately, these treatments caused serious side effects and failed to provide lasting relief. Her medical history revealed several important contributing factors: Multiple courses of antibiotics for acne in her late twenties Prolonged high workplace stress An emotionally draining unfair dismissal court case A deeply distressing miscarriage, followed shortly by the onset of bowel symptoms Shortly after these events, symptoms associated with Crohn’s disease, proctitis, and ulcerative colitis began to develop and gradually worsened.

Homeopathic Approach

Treatment began with a detailed homeopathic case assessment, taking into account not only her digestive symptoms, but also her emotional history, stress levels, and overall health picture.

We tried a small number of carefully selected homeopathic remedies before identifying the one that best matched her individual symptom pattern.

Initially, there was a temporary aggravation of symptoms, which is a recognised part of the homeopathic healing response when the correct remedy is given. This phase was followed by a slow but steady improvement.

Progress and Outcome

Once placed on a daily maintenance dose, her condition continued to improve over the course of the year. As her symptoms evolved, remedies were adjusted accordingly.

  • By March 2019, bleeding and discomfort had completely stopped

  • By June 2019, she was free from symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

  • She has remained symptom-free to this day, without returning to immunosuppressive medication

This case demonstrates how a holistic homeopathic approach can support the body’s natural healing processes, even in long-standing inflammatory bowel conditions.

Frequently asked questions about Ulcerative Colitis, Proctitis, and Crohn’s Disease

Ulcerative colitis affects the lining of the colon and rectum, while Crohn’s disease can involve any part of the digestive tract and often penetrates deeper layers of tissue. Both are forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Homeopathy does not treat diseases in isolation but focuses on the individual person and their symptom pattern. Some people with chronic digestive conditions find homeopathy supportive when conventional treatments have not provided lasting relief.

Yes. A temporary aggravation can occur when the correct remedy is given and is often followed by gradual improvement. This response is monitored carefully during treatment.

Each case is unique. Long-standing conditions such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis often require ongoing treatment over months, with remedies adjusted as symptoms change.

Yes. Homeopathy can be used alongside conventional medical care. Any changes to prescribed medication should always be discussed with a GP or specialist.
